Account for battery losses and wear

A battery consumes some energy in charging and discharging, and repeated use has an economic cost. In cost optimisation, SmartgridOne can consider configured roundtrip efficiency and a wear cost or minimum price margin when deciding to shift energy.

01 / SmartgridOne Light

Recognise the energy that does not come back

Roundtrip efficiency describes how much charged energy can be recovered after a complete charge and discharge cycle. Enter a value appropriate to the installed battery. The cost comparison needs to allow for these losses: a small difference between the charging price and the later avoided purchase price may be insufficient. This setting gives the energy plan a useful economic input. Review it together with the other battery parameters during commissioning.

Put a value on using storage

Depending on the available cost-optimisation settings, you can enter a wear cost per charged kWh or a minimum difference required between low and high prices. That discourages economic cycling when the expected benefit does not cover the configured cost and losses. Relatively flat prices can therefore mean little battery activity. Explain that resting storage can be a reasonable outcome of the chosen settings. Help the customer understand why visible cycling is not always the desired outcome.

Check the source of the charged energy

Grid charging is evaluated against the purchase price, while storing the home's solar surplus also gives up potential export revenue. Configure both tariff sides before tuning wear assumptions. Review this together with the battery's chosen strategy and any minimum-charge schedule. Local schedules require an active local storage mode and can be superseded by external control. These settings help you give the customer's battery use a clear economic basis within the chosen storage strategy.

In practice

Why the battery can stay still on a quiet price day

The day's prices differ only slightly, and the customer's battery is configured with efficiency losses and a wear allowance. The expected gain from charging now and using the energy later may not cover those inputs. The controller can therefore leave the battery relatively inactive in cost optimisation. Review the tariff and battery settings with the customer before changing them merely to create visible movement.

Before commissioning

Configure storage with a reason

  • Use an appropriate roundtrip-efficiency value.
  • Set the supported wear cost or minimum price margin.
  • Verify purchase and export prices and the battery strategy.
  • Review charge targets and any external control.
